Mexican weddings and 'fish and chips'
Last Friday I went to a Mexican wedding which was a very fun and interesting experience. Not least because there was a mariachi band. They played the song that goes dah dah dah dah dah duh dah dah dah dah duh dadadadadaaaaaaa which yes, is quite literally the biggest stereotype that could have happened. But, I never realised how skillful mariachi are. They have violinists, harpists, different sized guitars and man they can sing. There were also sugared almonds. I don’t understand sugared almonds. They taste like soap and yet they’ve managed to travel across the Atlantic and infiltrate weddings over here as well. I think this is a tradition that needs to end, I would suggest giving guests truffles. They taste a lot better and you can’t really go wrong with chocolate.
Now, I obviously met a lot of Mexican people at the wedding. It is always amusing to me to learn about the stereotypes that other countries have of England, and I always ask. There’s the obvious and what I've come to expect are; Harry Potter, tea, the Queen etc. But in Mexico people always mention ‘fish and chips’. When I introduce myself and say I’m from England, after the general confusion about my name, people often mention ‘fish and chips’. This was a quirk that slightly confused me. I didn’t really understand the slight obsession with this dish, if you can call it that. Then, I was talking to someone who asked us how many times a week we ate ‘fish and chips’. Now, I can’t speak for all of the English but in my household we probably eat it about once a month (and that's when I was a kid, I don't think I ate it all whilst being at university). Apparently here they think ‘fish and chips’ is our equivalent of ‘tacos’ and we eat it 3 or 4 times a week. Can you imagine? To contextualise, tacos here are eaten A LOT. Like a lot a lot. They are sold on pretty much every street corner, in corner-shops and there are ‘torterillas’ that just sell tacos. It’s a pretty staple food here (that’s an understatement) so now I understand why people ask me about fish and chips. And this person isn’t the only person who thought this. Apparently we drink tea all the time and eat ‘fish and chips’ whilst watching Harry Potter.
